The 2015 report of estimated water use for the U.S. is finally here. Released every five years, the quinquennial report estimates total water use over eight categories: thermoelectric, irrigation, public supply, industrial, mining, aquaculture, domestic, and livestock. Here are a few highlights from the latest report:
• In 2015, withdrawals in the U.S. totaled 322 billion gallons per day (Bgal/d), resulting in a 9 percent decrease since 2010 when total withdrawals were 354 Bgal/d.
• Withdrawals for thermoelectric power, irrigation, and public supply accounted for 90 percent of total withdrawals in 2015.
• California, Texas, Idaho, and Florida accounted for 26 percent of total water withdrawals in the U.S. in 2015.
• Since 2010, the U.S. population increased 4 percent and total domestic water use decreased 3 percent, which reduced per capita use to 82 gallons per day from 88 gallons per day (2010 report).
