PaleoBioDB

Python for Informatics: Remixing an Open Book

It is quite natural for academics who are continuously told to "publish or perish" to want to always create something from scratch that is their own fresh creation. This book is an experiment in not starting from scratch, but instead "re-mixing" the book titled Think Python: How to Think Like a Computer Scientist written by Allen B. Downey, Jeff Elkner and others.
In December of 2009, I was preparing to teach SI502 - Networked Programming at the University of Michigan for the fifth semester in a row and decided it was time to write a Python textbook that focused on exploring data instead of understanding algorithms and abstractions. My goal in SI502 is to teach people life-long data handling skills using Python. Few of my students were planning to be be professional computer programmers. Instead, they planned be librarians, managers, lawyers, biologists, economists, etc. who happened to want to skillfully use technology in their chosen field.
I never seemed to find the perfect data-oriented Python book for my course so I set out to write just such a book. Luckily at a faculty meeting three weeks before I was about to start my new book from scratch over the holiday break, Dr. Atul Prakash showed me the Think Python book which he had used to teach his Python course that semester. It is a well-written Computer Science text with a focus on short, direct explanations and ease of learning.
De la introducción de
Python for Informatics: Exploring Information, de Charles Severance.

EFI support
If your system is using secureBoot, turn it off.
If you installed Linux Mint in Virtualbox in EFI mode and it cannot boot post-install, type "exit", choose "Boot Maintenance Manager", "Boot from file" and select EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi.
Post-installation, the EFI boot file is located in /boot/efi/EFI/ubuntu/grubx64.efi. If your system is unable to find this file, copy it to /boot/efi/boot/bootx64.efi (alternatively you can write "fs0:\EFI\linuxmint\grubx64.efi" into a /boot/efi/startup.nsh file).
Note: Linux Mint 16 places its boot files in /boot/efi/EFI/ubuntu to work around a bug in Ubuntu 13.10. Consequently Linux Mint 16 supports EFI installations, but cannot be dual-booted with Ubuntu in EFI mode.

Reemplazando XP

Linux Mint: The purpose of Linux Mint is to produce a modern, elegant and comfortable operating system which is both powerful and easy to use. Started in 2006, Linux Mint is now the 4th most widely used home operating system behind Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS and Canonical's Ubuntu. Based on Debian and Ubuntu, it provides about 30,000 packages and one of the best software managers.

Xubuntu: Xubuntu is an elegant and easy-to-use operating system. Xubuntu comes with Xfce, which is a stable, light and configurable desktop environment. Xubuntu is a community-developed, GNU/Linux-based, Free/Open Source operating system for personal computers. It is built on a core of the popular Ubuntu operating system. Xubuntu is perfect for those who want the most out of their desktops, laptops and netbooks with a modern look and enough features for efficient, daily usage. It works well on older hardware too.

Lubuntu: Lubuntu is a fast and lightweight operating system developed by a community of Free and Open Source enthusiasts. The core of the system is based on Linux and Ubuntu . Lubuntu uses the minimal desktop LXDE, and a selection of light applications. We focus on speed and energy-efficiency. Because of this, Lubuntu has very low hardware requirements.

Elementary OS: is a computer operating system built on the Linux kernel. It is designed to run on any relatively new 32- and 64-bit desktop or laptop, whether Mac or PC.

MyPaint

What? A program generator/configurator for generating electronic GIS windows:
- via a standard browser
- rich functionality (RIA)
- based on open standards
- Built on top of geomajas.

How? As a non-technical user, you may configure geGIS so as to manage and publish your geographical data.
- straightforward to configure
- integrated authorisation
- open and extendible (programming)
- on the basis of dynamic SVG (AJAX & SVG)

Why?
Public administrations without GIS may manage the data for which they are the authentic source.
Public administrations with a GIS system may connect their GIS to the geGIS platform.
All stakeholders (B2B, B2C, B2G) keen to have their own GIS may use and extend the geGIS.
